Driffield Ladies 1st XI 5 Alnwick Ladies 1
Driffield Ladies 1st XI have started the new season with a bang. The ladies have entered the league determined to show what they are really made of. They finished last season 8th out of 12 in the North East league, after a few fiery and gritty performances at the end. Driffield have certainly started the new season with the same fire in their bellies that they finished with.
Driffield started the game upbeat and enthusiastic. Alnwick had travelled a long way from the North, and Driffield were not prepared to let them in gently. Driffield were quick on the ball, passing well and fighting for every 50/50 challenge. A direct hit onto the left post from Elke Raftery allowed Louise Morrison to slip in the first goal, within the first 10 minutes of the game.
Maybe too comfortable, too soon, Driffield allowed Alnwick to come back quickly. They passed the ball around and with Driffield not keeping up with their opposite players in places, Alnwick took their opportunity on goal. A wake up call meant Driffield reacted with tight marking and forward thinking. The ladies looked towards the Alnwick goal, and soon got there with some useful passing around the D and a second goal from Kate Morgan on the penalty spot.
Driffield started the second half positively and keenly, although all feeling the heat of the September sun. The local ladies were in control. Driffield used their legs to get back and defend when needed, and Sue Morgan and Vicky Scott kept Alnwick out of the D on the left. Meanwhile, Laura Hook worked hard all over the back line covering her territory and frustrating the Alnwick attackers. ‘Girlie of the Game’, Ziggy Green made some life saving tackles at the top of the D as the sweeper. On the occasion that Alnwick made it through the Driffield defence, Caroline Mitchell made sure that their efforts came to nothing as she cleared every attempt on goal with a goal keeping kick or a block.
The second half saw Driffield become a confident, composed and tactical team. They worked the ball well down the wings using quick wall passes then looking for the forwards to send the ball on to. Driffield were frustrating Alnwick down the right, with Natalie Wilford and Ashley Cowton working round them from the back. Driffield’s profits came from the middle of the pitch, as the top of the diamond sent many accurate and weighted balls right through the Alnwick defence. Fiona Tuplin persisted and earned Driffield a further 2 goals with one little flick over the keeper and another straight through the keepers legs. Driffield were on top, and wanted more. The ladies demonstrated they that they can play with great vision and silky movements from the back, all the way to the forward line. The fifth goal started with another ball from the midfield to Louise Morrison who worked hard and held up the ball on back line, then passed across the keeper to Anna Kitching on the left post, who diverted it into the back of the goal.
It was a storming start to the Driffield Ladies 1st team’s season. If they remain as positive, committed and determined as this week they will enjoy a few more wins than they did last season.
